After the debacle of the Winter War in 1941, the German troops again take up the offensive. This time in the south of the Soviet Union, 3,000 kilometres from their homeland. The soldiers often spend days at the "Waggontoaster" playing cards. Many are thrown directly from the barracks courtyard to the front: "We were completely disoriented. We also didn't know what to expect. We knew the war only from the newspaper, the newsreel or from the roar of our trainers about the heroic deaths of our predecessors.
